Welcome to AltBite ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share your information when you use our mobile application and services.

2. Information We Collect

We collect three categories of information:

Information You Provide

• Account Information: Email address, username, and password
• Profile Information: Health preferences, dietary restrictions, and nutrition goals
• Scan History: Products you scan and save within the app
• AI Chat Text: The text you type into the AI Nutritionist chat. This is sent to our AI provider to generate your response. See Section 4 for full details.

Automatically Collected Data

• Device Information: Device type, operating system, and unique device identifiers
• Diagnostics: Crash reports and performance data used to fix bugs and improve stability
• Usage Analytics: Anonymized data about which app features are used, collected to help us improve the experience

Subscription-Related Data

• Purchase Status: Whether you have an active subscription, managed through RevenueCat
• We do not receive or store your full payment credentials. Payment transactions are handled securely by Apple and RevenueCat.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide, maintain, and improve our services
• Personalize your nutrition recommendations
• Process your subscription and verify access
• Send you technical notices and support messages
• Respond to your comments and questions
• Analyze anonymized usage patterns to improve our app
• Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms & Conditions

4. AI-Powered Features and Data Use

AltBite includes an AI Nutritionist feature powered by Anthropic's Claude AI. Here is exactly how it works:

What Is Sent to the AI

When you use the AI Nutritionist chat, only the text you type into the chat is sent to Anthropic's servers. This may include nutrition questions, food preferences, or health-related goals that you choose to share.

What Is NOT Sent to the AI

The following information is never sent to Anthropic:

• Your name
• Your email address
• Your account ID
• Payment information
• Device identifiers

How Anthropic Uses Your Chat Text

• Provider: Anthropic (Claude AI)
• Purpose: To generate AI nutrition responses to your questions
• Data use: Your chat text is used only to generate a response. It is not used for advertising or to build personal profiles.
• Anthropic's privacy policy governs how they handle data on their servers. You can review it at anthropic.com/privacy.

User Consent for AI Features

• AI chat is disabled by default. You must explicitly agree to use it before any data is sent to Anthropic.
• You can withdraw consent at any time by disabling AI chat in the app settings.
• No AI data is sent without your permission.

5. Data Sharing

We share data with the following third parties only to make the app work:

• Anthropic (Claude AI): Receives only the text you type in the AI Nutritionist chat, used solely to generate responses. Not used for advertising.
• RevenueCat: Processes your purchase and subscription status. RevenueCat complies with Apple's data protection standards. AltBite does not receive your full payment credentials.
• OpenFoodFacts: Provides the food product database used when you scan products. Queries are anonymized.

We do not sell personal data and do not share data for advertising purposes.

6. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. This includes:

• Encryption of data in transit and at rest
• Secure authentication mechanisms
• Regular security audits and updates
• Limited access to personal information by our staff

7. Data Retention

We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access your personal information
• Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
• Delete your account and associated data
• Export your data in a portable format
• Opt-out of marketing communications

Data Deletion Process

In-App Deletion: You can permanently delete your account and all associated data directly from the app:

1. Open the AltBite app
2. Navigate to Profile → Data Management
3. Click "Delete My Account & Data"
4. Confirm the deletion

What Gets Deleted:

• Your profile and account information (immediately)
• All scan history and favorites (within 30 days)
• Your dietary preferences and health data (immediately)
• All AI conversation history (immediately)
• Backup copies (within 90 days)

What We Retain: For legal and financial compliance, we anonymize (not delete) payment transaction records for 7 years as required by law.

Alternative Contact: If you prefer, you can also request account deletion by emailing privacy@altbite.app with your registered email address.

9. Children's Privacy

Our app is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

10. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place for such transfers.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.

12. California & International Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you may have additional privacy rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You may exercise these rights by contacting us at privacy@altbite.app.
